Video Poker - Online Poker Game
Video poker introduced transparency into gambling.
It's simple to determine the odds of any video poker
machine, based on the payout of two hands: the full
house and the flush. They might as well advertise the
odds on any given machine. The looseness or tightness of
a machine is posted in the payout table for all to see.
Contrast that with the slot machines. The player only
knows the overall payout, not any given machine's
payout.
Video poker can also give the player the best odds in
the house of any game. Some machines provide the player
with a small statistical advantage over the house,
assuming perfect play. Unlike roulette or craps, there's
no juice fee or house commission. It doesn't get any
more transparent and up front than video poker. In fact,
in Las Vegas, regulations ensure that regardless of the
number of coins played, players are dealt the identical
hand. There's no wondering if you'll get a worse hand if
you deposit the max coins.
The player credits his account by inserting coins into
the video poker machine. Computer based machines accept
input from a paper ticket. The player then selects the
denomination and the number of coins he wants to wager.
The low stake machines have denominations between 5c and
$1 and the high denomination machines between $1 and $5.
The number of coins varies between 1 and 5. If the
player selects $1 and 5 coins his wager stands at $5.
This amount is debited to the player's account. The
player then clicks the ?deal button?. Five cards appear
on the video poker machine's display. The player then
has to apply his video poker strategy to decide which
cards to hold.
The single critical element in video poker strategy is
discarding the cards that will give each particular hand
the highest possible expected return. The rules and the
payout table will affect which discard decisions are
correct for each hand. There are 32 different ways you
can play each hand, but usually there is only one
optimal strategy for a particular hand.
Video Poker versus Slot Machines
Video poker games and slot machine games look a lot
alike. They're both coin-operated gambling machines that
a player sits in front of and pushes a button (or
buttons) or pulls a lever to operate. Both machines have
a hopper that pays out a players' winnings in coins,
although newer machines print out a ticket instead of
spitting out coins. Either way, the games are similar in
appearance and have the same purpose: to allow gamblers
to play without having to interact with a dealer or with
other players.
